Technical Writer - Firm Services (Legal)



Summary/objective

HORNE, one of the largest accounting and consulting firms in the Southeast, is seeking a Technical Writer who is responsible for creating clear, concise, and user-friendly documentation to communicate complex information in a manner that can be easily understood by the target audience.  The Technical Writer works closely with cross functional development teams and other identified Subject Matter Experts to gain the knowledge and understanding required to create simple and engaging content including but not limited to product user guides and manuals.  They are responsible for revising existing documentation as products and processes change over time, as well as maintaining a reference library for managing the documentation.

Essential functions

The Technical Writer job duties include, but are not limited to: 

  • Develops comprehensive, well-structured documentation for products and services including but not limited to user guides, manuals, product release notes, and technical specifications. 
  • Translates complex technical information into clear, concise, and user-friendly documentation.
  • Creates charts, diagrams, or other visual aids as needed to clearly convey content.
  • Collaborates with cross functional team members and subject matter experts to gather and verify technical information.
  • Participates in design and development meetings to understand product architecture, functionality, and the end-user experience.
  • Ensures documentation is tailored to the audience of the documentation, such as, system administrators and end-users.
  • Gathers feedback from subject matter experts and end users to continuously improve documentation quality.
  • Routinely reviews and revises documentation to ensure it remains accurate, current, and relevant.
  • Maintains and manages documentation within HORNE's document management system including the use of version control to track documentation changes over time.
  • Ensures documentation complies with company and/or product branding and style guidelines; is grammatically and technically accurate; meets quality standards; and is completed on time.
  • Provides training to team members on how to access and utilize the documentation.
  • Recommends and maintains agreed upon technical documentation best practices.
  • Collaborates with fellow technical communicators to develop new approaches for continuously improving documentation practices. 
  • Manages documentation for multiple projects.

Physical demands

  • Prolonged periods sitting at a desk and working on a computer.
  • Must be able to lift up to 20 pounds at times.

Travel required

Will not exceed 20%

Required education and experience

  • Bachelor's degree in communications, journalism, or a relevant technical field.
  • 2+ years of experience in technical writing or software documentation 
  • Proficiency in word processor programs such as Microsoft Word and Google Docs and PDF software such as Adobe Acrobat  
  • Familiarity with systems development life cycle (SDLC) 
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills 
  • Attention to detail 
  • Healthy analytical and critical thinking skills 
  • Time management and organizational skills 
  • Experience with both print and digital media formats 
  • Experience with document management systems to include M-Files, SharePoint, & ShareFile 

Preferred qualifications

  • Experience in an Agile development environment is a plus 
  • Familiarity with HTML and CSS preferred
