Mid-Level Biologist/Ecologist - Midwest Region (Finance)



The Opportunity:

Tetra Tech is adding a Mid-Level Biologist/Ecologist sought to lead biology tasks in support of a variety of projects primarily within our energy practice. Our energy practice includes routing, sitting, and permitting wind and solar electric power generation, electric transmission lines and substations, natural gas pipelines, and other related facilities.

The successful candidate will have a strong wildlife background with a primary focus on leading biology tasks such as fieldwork, data management and reporting, and supporting clients with biology-related federal, state, and local permitting. A multidisciplinary science-based background and prior field experience of a similar nature is desired. This position reports through our Lakewood, Colorado office, but will be based locally in the Midwest (Illinois, Indiana, Ohio, or Michigan).

Your Role:

  • Lead wildlife field surveys (habitat assessments, raptor nest surveys, burrowing owl surveys, etc.), either independently or team lead, in a variety of climates and ecological regions with a focus in the Midwestern and Central U.S. May involve long hours and extended travel (two weeks or more) during the field season.
  • Lead biological resource-related tasks from the proposal phase through fieldwork, report writing, and interpreting and communicating results. Involves setting up surveys, managing crews, and delegating tasks.
  • Conduct non-wildlife fieldwork, dependent on capabilities (e.g., wetland delineations, vegetation monitoring, miscellaneous assessments).
  • Technical writing including technical reports, reviews of peer-prepared reports, and proposals.
  • Interpret and communicate survey results and biology-related impacts to clients and PMs.
  • Costing biological resource tasks for proposals.
  • Support local, state and federal project permitting, including communicating with state and federal wildlife agencies.
  • Work concurrently on multiple projects at different phases.
  • Conduct activities in line with internal procedures, legislation, and industry standards.
  • Pursue continuous professional development and maintain a high degree of discipline knowledge and awareness.
  • Work in a safe manner at all times and report all health and safety incidents and concerns.
  • Additional duties as required.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree (Master's preferred) in Biology, Ecology, Environmental Science, or related field.
  • 5+ years of relevant experience, including field leadership and technical reporting.
  • Proficient in writing technical reports, describing baseline conditions, and analyzing impacts on protected species and their habitat.
  • Experience with environmental impact analysis related to energy projects; biological resources mitigation, design, and monitoring; and construction compliance monitoring.
  • An understanding and ability to interpret federal, state, and local regulations on a project-specific basis to assess project permitting feasibility and requirements.
  • Experience engaging with federal, state, and local regulators.
  • Ability to work independently and in a team-oriented work environment.
  • Excellent organization and oral/written communications skills.
  • Ability to prioritize a variety of assignments in time-critical situations.
  • Ability to analyze data and draw valid, defensible conclusions.
  • A willingness to learn and be adaptable.
  • Willing to work in sometimes difficult conditions and often miles from a vehicle. Physical challenges typically encountered may include long off-trail hikes, steep slopes, extreme hot and cold conditions, and biological hazards (animals and plants).
  • Schedule must have flexibility to travel (land or air), at times on short notice.
  • Ability to take clear and accurate field notes by hand or on a tablet/smartphone.
  • Tetra Tech-qualified driver of corporate/rental vehicles.
  • Must possess a valid driver's license with a clean driving record without restrictions.

Compensation:

Pay commensurate with experience.

Pay Range: $70,000 - $95,000

Pay Range - There are multiple factors that are considered in determining final pay for a position, including, but not limited to, relevant work experience and demonstrated work experience in the above role; skills, certifications, and competencies that align to the specified role; geographic location; and education, as well as contract provisions regarding labor categories that are specific to the position
