Grant Writer (Finance)



The Staff Grant Writer will support the research enterprise of the Department of Emergency Medicine by identifying federal grant opportunities and providing expert assistance in the development, editing, and management of competitive research proposals. The position will focus on federal sponsors such as the National Institutes of Health (NIH), National Science Foundation (NSF), Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ), and Patient-Centered Outcomes Research Institute (PCORI), the Department of Defense (DoD), the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), Department of Homeland Security (DHS), Department of Health & Human Services (HHS), Department of Transportation (DOT), as well as the Florida Department of Health (DOH). This role will serve as a critical resource for faculty and research staff, helping to increase the department's research funding success.Bachelor's degree and minimum of 2 years of experience writing or supporting federal research grant proposals in a healthcare or academic setting.

Preferred Qualifications
\n
    \n
  • Bachelor's degree in Public Health, Life Sciences, Communications, Social Sciences, or a related field OR Master's degree or higher in a scientific, medical, or health policy discipline.
  • \n
  • Demonstrated familiarity with NIH, NSF, AHRQ, or PCORI funding mechanisms.
  • \n
  • Exceptional writing, editing, and communication skills, with an ability to convey scientific concepts clearly and persuasively.
  • \n
  • Strong organizational skills and ability to manage multiple deadlines across several faculty members.
  • \n
  • Working knowledge of federal grant submission systems (e.g., ASSIST, Research.gov) and institutional approval processes.
  • \n
  • Experience supporting research in a clinical or academic department of emergency medicine or related field.
  • \n
  • Familiarity with patient-centered outcomes research, implementation science, health services research, or clinical trials.
  • \n
  • Knowledge of university research systems (e.g., Cayuse, InfoEd) and compliance structures.
  • \n
  • Experience assisting with complex proposals such as center grants, career development awards, or multi-institutional collaborations.

Grant Opportunity Monitoring

  • Proactively scan and disseminate relevant funding opportunities in alignment with the department's research priorities.
  • \n
  • Utilize platforms such as NIH RePORTER, Grants.gov, NSF FastLane/Research.gov, and PCORI's funding announcements to identify appropriate mechanisms (e.g., R01, R21, K08, R18).
  • \n
\n
Proposal Development and Writing
\n
    \n
  • Collaborate closely with emergency medicine faculty, clinician-researchers, and fellows to develop persuasive and technically sound grant narratives.
  • \n
  • Provide writing and editing support for specific components of federal proposals, such as significance, innovation, research strategy, and dissemination plans.
  • \n
  • Prepare and update institutional templates, boilerplate language, and supporting documents including facilities descriptions and data resources.
  • \n

Project and Document Management
\n
    \n
  • Support PIs in compiling and submitting complete, accurate proposal packages in coordination with university pre-award offices.
  • \n
  • Maintain internal documentation on grant submissions, timelines, approvals, and outcomes to support strategic planning and reporting.
  • \n
  • Track resubmission opportunities and coordinate document revision processes.
  • \n

Compliance and Internal Review
\n
    \n
  • Ensure adherence to funding agency guidelines and university policies for proposal formatting, budgeting, and submission timelines.
  • \n
  • Facilitate internal scientific and administrative reviews prior to submission deadlines.
  • \n
  • Assist in coordinating with collaborators, subcontract sites, and external partners for multi-site or multi-PI grants.
  • \n

Faculty Support and Research Development
\n
    \n
  • Support junior faculty and clinical researchers with early-stage grant planning and concept development.
  • \n
  • Provide informal training or office hours on grantsmanship, sponsor requirements, and reviewer expectations.
