Lab Manager-Biology (Biotech)
The Lab Manager will enable the day-to-day running of the biology research operation using comprehensive knowledge of relevant science, including molecular biological and biochemical techniques, PCR, protein chemistry, cell culture work, and drug screening assays. Will be responsible for the general and administrative organization of the labs, stock room, and common consumables and reagents. Will assist PTC research scientists and associates in the purchasing and stocking of reagents and supplies and the technical management of the lab's equipment, its maintenance, and repair. The Lab Manager will also assist in budget development and management of the departments purchase/spend objectives and adherence to budget goals.
Primary duties/responsibilities:
Lab Management: Supplies, Equipment, Maintenance, and Safety
Manage an efficient and organized laboratory environment
Establish and maintain a simple ordering procedure that insures timely arrival and adequate stock of needed supplies, reagents, and consumables
Negotiate with vendors to obtain best pricing and obtain quotes when required
Coordinate with investigators to ensure all items are received and follow up with vendors when necessary
Assist in budgeting and purchasing of new equipment
Oversee lab equipment service contracts and preventative maintenance, calibration, and certification schedules
Manage cold room, freezer, and N2 storage, maximizing the use of space
Arrange and supervise repairs of lab equipment
Request and coordinate lab-associated Facilities and IT work
Promote PTC Safety culture, coordinating with PTC's Safety committee to ensure appropriate safety information is available and safety plans are followed within the laboratory
Research Support
Prepare and maintain primary and established cell culture systems
Provide support for drug discovery and optimization by performing established cell-based assays
KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS/ABILITIES REQUIRED
* Minimum level of education and years of relevant work experience.
Bachelor's degree in a scientific discipline , preferably Biology, Biochemistry, Molecular Biology with a minimum of 3 years of relevant experience.
* Special knowledge or skills needed and/or licenses or certificates required.
Experience ordering supplies and communicating with vendors
Ability to communicate and work productively with a diverse group of people
Effective planning, organization, and time management skills including the ability to support and prioritize multiple projects
Ability to work independently and collaboratively, as required, in a fast-paced, matrixed, team environment consisting of internal and external team members.
Problem solver, self-starter
Proficiency with Microsoft Office suite
*Special knowledge or skills and/or licenses or certificates preferred.
Mechanical aptitude to make minor fixes to equipment
Proficiency with Microsoft Teams, SharePoint, Oracle ERP
* Travel requirements
Less than 5%
*Physical requirements
Laboratory-based position may require lifting of reagent bottles and small instrumentation.
