Nurse Clinician - Part-Time (Healthcare)



Position Summary

The Nurse Clinician obtains a thorough history of health, surgery, social habits, and medication as well as performing a physical exam on patients. Completes appropriate documentation, and provides patients with pre-operative education. Responsible, through nursing processes, for providing and coordinating nursing care, and resource management for patients and families in the pre-operative phase of the surgical process. Uses clinical judgment and knowledge of basic principles of nursing based on the biological, physical, and psychosocial sciences to perform accurate patient assessments and to relay information about patients to anesthesia and surgeons.


Essential Job Functions/Accountabilities

Demonstrates knowledge and ability to interview pre-admission testing patients and to obtain a thorough health/illness history including HPI, chief complaint, medical and surgical history, and review of systems. Performs nursing assessment and completes documentation as required to reflect policy and regulatory issues.


Demonstrates knowledge and ability to perform physical examination of patients, document findings, and communicate to appropriate physician. Demonstrates knowledge to assess and document normal versus abnormal findings.


Demonstrates knowledge of a multitude of medications and their impact on the surgical process.


Educates patients and families on pre-surgery requirements, instructions, and medications; and then documents necessary pre-operative teaching of patient and family.


Facilitates physicians orders by performing venipuncture and obtaining specimens for testing. Ensures safety measures by practicing with a questioning attitude and utilizing the Safe Surgery Checklist.


Works collaboratively as part of a team with co-workers and communicates effectively with peers, physicians, and outside departments. Demonstrates knowledge of Infection Control and Safety Policies and Procedures.


Works toward department improvements by sharing ideas for improvement/revision of policies/procedures. Participates in educational programs, serves on committees, and seeks other opportunities for professional and personal growth and development.


Participates in competency maintenance and training of all team members.


Participates in interdepartmental continuing medical education activities including in-services and lectures in order to maintain professional knowledge of practice.


All other duties not specifically assigned.


Position Requirements

Education: Graduate of a school of Nursing. B.S.N. preferred; Successful completion of course work for specialized training in basic health assessment.


Experience: Three (3) to Five (5) years of demonstrated experience in field or profession preferred.


Technical Skills: N/A


Certifications/Licenses/Registrations: Current licensure to practice as a Registered Nurse in the State of Ohio; BLS required.
