Cost Accounting Manager (Finance)



Job Overview

The Cost Accounting Manager is responsible for ensuring that GLC's financial information is accurate and up-to-date in order to communicate financial data to management to assist with strategic decision-making. This includes the analysis and interpretation of cost data related to product production, raw material purchases, inventory and labor to identify cost-saving opportunities, and ensuring that financial reports comply with Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP), other regulatory requirements and sound internal controls. The Cost Accounting Manager is responsible for developing and implementing cost accounting systems, as well as managing and supervising the cost accounting team.

Job Responsibilities

  • Supervise and coordinate the work of Cost Accountants.
  • Direct and participates in developing and maintaining standard manufacturing costs.
  • Direct and participates in cost analyses and rate studies.
  • Analyze the effects of inventory transactions upon general ledger account relationships.
  • Provide analysis of manufacturing variances.
  • Direct and participates in completing inventory compilation and valuation to obtain accurate inventory values and sales/ production records.
  • Validate the cost of new products and new processes, and develop Bill of Material and standards costs.
  • Direct and participates in identifying weaknesses in existing internal controls and costing system processes that have a direct or indirect effect on inventory and costs.
  • Analyze complex manufacturing processes in coordination with Plant Managers and other personnel to improve decision making that will result in improved efficiency and financial reporting, transactional and data accuracy.
  • Propose new internal controls that will result in improved transactional integrity.Work with all levels of the company to coordinate, analyze, prepare and present data to assure profitability, including routine analysis and special project analysis.
  • Work with operations management to identify opportunities to improve performance and reduce costs and adherence to GAAP.
  • Performs annual physical inventory and cycle counts when necessary to correctly reflect inventory balances.
  • Assists with monthly closing process, including planning and leading various inventory reviews, preparing journal entries, posting, balancing and reconciling subsidiary ledgers.
  • Manage and review the preparation of outside storage reconciliations for accuracy and completeness.
  • Actively participate in the annual external audit from an inventory perspective.
  • Provide account analysis for inventory related accounts and other accounts as necessary.
  • Maintain integrity and accuracy of the accounting system.
  • Serve as an SAP subject matter expert for plant finance functions, ensuring all transactions are properly captured, costed and reported through SAP. Partner with IT and plant personnel to resolve system or data integrity issues as needed.
  • Assist with special projects, as necessary.
  • Identify key performance indicators that are relevant and will drive profitability.
  • All GLC employees are expected to perform any assignment or job task according to the stated safety policies and procedures.

  • Other duties as assigned by the manager.

Required Education and Experience

  • Bachelor's degree in Finance or Accounting.
  • 5 years of cost accounting experience with 2 or more years of supervisory experience.
  • Strong background in cost accounting, inventory control, and financial reporting
  • Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to distill large data sets into actionable insights
  • Demonstrated ability to manage cross-functional relationships across finance and operations
  • Must be legally authorized to work a company in the U.S. without sponsorship.
  • SAP experience is required.
  • General understanding of manufacturing processes.
  • Ability to make sound, independent decisions based on expertise and experience.
  • Ability to handle multiple tasks, troubleshoot and problem solve.
  • Proficient in MS Office suite, with an expertise in Excel with ability to perform ad-hoc reporting and analysis.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Ability to interact with management and all levels of production.
  • Exceptional analytical skills.
  • High attention to detail, accuracy and strong planning and organization skills.
  • High level of independence, initiative, and ownership of results.

Preferred Education and Experience

  • Master's degree in Management, Accounting or Finance or CPA preferred
  • 8-12 years of experience preferred

Working Conditions

• Work is performed in an office setting.

• Occasional exposure to industrial operations including: temperature extremes from approximately 35°F to 100°F; noise levels in excess of 85 dB; moisture and moving machinery.
