Position Summary:

The Assistant Director for Communications is a member of the Housing & Residential Education (HRE) leadership team and provides direct oversight of the department's external communications, publications, website, video production, and student support programs. The Assistant Director will be responsible for developing and executing an annual marketing and communications plan, campaigns, routine and emergency communications, and annual publications on behalf of the department. This team will have direct marketing and communications responsibilities for all Housing & Residential Education units across Tampa, St. Petersburg, and Sarasota-Manatee campuses. The Assistant Director will be expected to collaborate with campus marketing and enrollment partners to achieve desired outcomes.

This position reports to the Director for Operations & Outreach and supervises three direct reports and one indirect report.Minimum Qualifications:

This position requires a Bachelor's degree from a regionally accredited institution with a minimum of four years related exempt experience, including two years of supervisory experience.

Preferred Qualifications:

Masters degree in a relevant field (Student Personnel, Business, Communications, Marketing, etc.)
Five years of fulltime professional experience

  • Strong copy writing and editing skills including excellent spelling, grammar, and messaging context
  • Ability to effectively present materials and messaging to 500 - 1000 audience members during departmental events
  • Exceptional attention to detail
  • Experience working with the media
  • Significant knowledge of consumer behavior related to social media
  • Ability to lead a diverse group of people to achieve specific goals
  • Ability to represent the department effectively on-camera in various media

FLSB1310 Equivalency:
4 years of directly relevant experience may be substituted for bachelor's degree.
6 years of directly relevant experience may be substituted for master's degree.

Administrative Leadership:

  • Plan, develop, and collaborate on the annual marketing and communications plan for Housing & Residential Education
  • Conduct, analyze, and respond to assessment activities on implemented strategies
  • Direct the short and long-term activities of the communications team to achieve strategic priorities and deadlines
  • Execute responsible stewardship of an annual budget
  • Provide a positive culture of learning and accountability when leading a team of four direct professional staff reports and 30 student employees
  • Ensure that all University standards, policies, and regulations are upheld
  • Take necessary steps to mitigate risk as appropriate.

Communications:
  • Serve as the primary copywriter and editor for all print and digital publications and student correspondence
  • Serve as the voice of Housing & Residential Education which includes significant on-camera work, responding to media requests, providing crisis communication, and directing the messaging & tone of the department as provided by the Director
  • Maintain a strong social media presence and respond as necessary to ensure that student and families have the most relevant information
  • Provide regular department updates to the Office of Parent & Family Engagement and other critical campus partners
  • Maintain all active communications channels for HRE including social media, online reporting forms, community email listservs, a third-party email vendor, etc.

Marketing:
  • Supervise HRE's brand identity usage within the department and insure alignment with University Communications & Marketing brand standards
  • Represent the department at Admissions and Orientation events (conduct public presentations, responding to individual questions, and organizing residential tours)
  • Publish statistical data that promote the residential experience and that tells the HRE story
  • Coordinate an exceptional residential daily and VIP tour experience
  • Maintain active trainings with various campus partners to provide up-to-date information about the department

Other:
  • Participate in emergency, after-hours related issues.
  • All other duties as assigned.
